The upgrade of Darlinghurst Road in Kings Cross marked the completion of the first of the City’s Gateway projects. It enlarged and fostered the public domain recognising the vibrant and robust character of the neighbourhood.

The subsequent modification of the recently upgraded Springfield Plaza was considered to further improve the function and amenity this important community space by opening up views and improving accessibility.

Paramount to the improvement of the plaza was the removal of the existing seating wall which divided the space and was seen to exacerbate anti-social activity.

The reinvigorated plaza has successfully negated negative elements and now draws a more balanced mix of local residents and visitors.

The scope of work included the addition of a new granite clad stairway connecting the northern edge of the plaza with the adjacent pedestrian ramp, additional bench seating and stainless steel handrails - all complementing existing elements within the plaza.
