Harmony Park is the first brand new park seen in the inner city for decades. The park is part of the City of Sydney’s $350 million investment to green Sydney by expanding the city’s urban forest, creating new parks and upgrading existing open space.

The 7,000 square metre Harmony Park was developed on the former Energy Australia construction site and Police Centre car park which was purchased by the City of Sydney in 2003. Spackman & Mossop (now Spackman Mossop Michaels) successfully tendered on the design and documentation for the new park in early 2004.

Mark Harper was the Project Landscape Architect responsible for design development and documentation of the project until he established his own practice.

Atlantis Design was subsequently engaged by Spackman & Mossop to provide continuity for the project by retaining the services of Mark Harper to oversee the completion of the tender documentation package and to provide design support services during the initial stages of construction, including responding to RFI’s, attending site inspections, consultant co-ordination and client liaison.

Features of Harmony Park include a series of lawn terraces connected by embankments across the natural slope of the site that provide for informal recreation; an upper lawn terrace that serves as an area for people to meet and sit while enjoying views across the park; a range of trees including native, evergreen and deciduous trees as well as garden beds and lawn areas to supplement existing trees and surround the park’s open centre; and an in-ground water storage tank to collect storm water and treat and purify it for reuse in the irrigation of the park grounds.
